What Is the TEF?

The Test d'évaluation de français (TEF) is the international version of the TEF family of French proficiency tests. It is created by the CCI Paris Île-de-France — the same body behind TEF Canada.

The TEF family includes several variants: TEF (general), TEF Canada (Canadian immigration), TEF Québec (Quebec immigration), and TEF IRN (French citizenship and residency). The general TEF is used for university admissions, professional certification, and personal assessment.

Results are mapped to CEFR levels (A1–C2) and are valid for two years. The TEF is recognised by the French Ministry of Education and available at 600+ test centres across 100+ countries.
