Get StartedWhat Is the Goethe-Zertifikat?
The Goethe-Zertifikat is a series of German language exams by the Goethe-Institut, Germany's official cultural institute operating in 98 countries. It is the most widely recognised German language qualification worldwide.
Six levels align to the CEFR: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2. Goethe B2 and C1 are the most common requirements for German university admission. Each level tests reading, listening, writing, and speaking.
Goethe certificates never expire. You can also retake individual modules (reading, listening, writing, or speaking) without repeating the entire exam — each module is assessed independently with a 60% pass mark.
