What Is the NT2 Staatsexamen?

The Staatsexamen Nederlands als Tweede Taal (NT2) is the official Dutch proficiency exam administered by DUO on behalf of the Dutch government. It is the standard certification for non-native speakers who need to prove their Dutch ability.

Two programmes are offered: Programma I (B1 level) for vocational work and civic integration, and Programma II (B2 level) for higher education and professional registration. NT2 Programma II is the standard for Dutch university admission.

Each section (reading, listening, writing, speaking) is a separate exam that can be taken and retaken independently. Results are pass/fail with no numerical score. Certificates are valid indefinitely.

Lezen (Reading)

  • Content: Multiple texts with questions
  • Time: 100 minutes
  • Format: Multiple choice and open questions
  • Result: Pass / Fail

Luisteren (Listening)

  • Content: Audio recordings with questions
  • Time: 75 minutes
  • Format: Multiple choice and open questions
  • Result: Pass / Fail

Schrijven (Writing)

  • Tasks: 2 (summary + argumentative/formal text)
  • Time: 60 minutes
  • Format: Structured writing tasks
  • Result: Pass / Fail

Spreken (Speaking)

  • Format: Computer-based recorded responses
  • Time: 30 minutes
  • Tasks: Multiple spoken response tasks
  • Result: Pass / Fail
