Get StartedWhat Is the JLPT?
The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is the world's leading Japanese proficiency test for non-native speakers. It is administered by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES), with approximately 1.3 million candidates from 90+ countries annually.
Five levels are offered: N5 (easiest) through N1 (most difficult). N1 and N2 focus on practical, everyday Japanese; N4 and N5 cover basic Japanese. Most universities require N2 or higher for admission.
The JLPT tests reading/vocabulary/grammar and listening only — there are no writing or speaking sections. Certificates never expire, making the JLPT a lifetime qualification. The test is held twice per year: July and December. Fees range from US$45 to US$109.
