What Is CELI?

CELI (Certificato di Conoscenza della Lingua Italiana) is an official Italian proficiency certificate issued by the University for Foreigners of Perugia. It is recognised by the Italian Ministry of Education.

Five main levels are offered: CELI 1 (A2), CELI 2 (B1), CELI 3 (B2), CELI 4 (C1), CELI 5 (C2), plus CELI Impatto (A1). Certificates never expire. CELI is one of the three official Italian language certificates alongside CILS and PLIDA.

CELI 3 (B2) is required for Italian university admission without the language entrance exam. CELI 2 (B1) is accepted for Italian citizenship applications. Available at test centres in over 40 countries.

Comprensione della lettura (Reading)

  • Content: Multiple texts with questions
  • Time: 60–75 minutes
  • Format: Multiple choice, true/false, matching, open questions
  • Focus: Newspapers, magazines, and formal texts

Comprensione dell'ascolto (Listening)

  • Content: Audio recordings with questions
  • Time: 20–30 minutes
  • Format: Multiple choice and completion
  • Focus: Radio, lectures, and conversations

Produzione scritta (Writing)

  • Tasks: 2 (summary/description + formal text)
  • Time: 90 minutes
  • Format: Structured writing with word limits
  • Focus: Formal and academic writing

Produzione orale (Speaking)

  • Parts: Conversation, role-play, picture description
  • Time: 15 minutes
  • Format: Face-to-face with examiner
  • Focus: Fluency, accuracy, and interaction
